I think I am going to be a doctor 02-24-10

Cooper and I are currently chillin' in an ER room at St. Lukes in The Woodlands.  We are here to save ourselves an admission downtown at TCH.  St. Lukes out here has a TCH ER staffed with Pediatricians from downtown.  Dr. B and Dr. V agreed to let us come here tonight, so here we are.  And again, I am going to be a doctor.  Or maybe I already am a doctor!  Cooper had to go to see Dr. B again this morning for a recheck of his ears and, as it turned out, a second round of antibiotic shots.  While we were on the way, I called Mel at Dr. V's office who then put me on the phone with Dr. V to discuss.  Overnight, Cooper didn't have any wet diapers at all.  He gets more than half of his IV fluids during the night, so that wasn't right.  He agreed we should recheck a chem panel and make sure he wasn't getting more dehydrated.  The labs were run stat, but true to form, Quest didn't have the results until around 6 tonight.  Dr. B called me after talking to Dr. V to tell me that we needed to bring Cooper in for fluids.  His BUN had jumped to 54 and his CO2 had dipped to 16.  And that is why we are now chillin' in an ER room at St. Lukes.  They are going to do a few boluses and then recheck labs.  As long as he is better, we'll hang our home TPN and fluids and head home.  We are also going to check his H&H after he is bolused because it was much lower today as well.  And again, he was dehydrated at the time, so it is probably lower than what it showed.  Once we have a good idea where his hemoglobin is, we'll make the decision to transfuse or not later this week or early next.  The ER doctor checked out Coop's ears and they are still not looking good.  (I interrupt this update to say that Mei says hi...they have come to move my car that was parked on the other side of the building and I didn't want to walk outside in the middle of the night alone with Cooper...in the dark.)  Okay - back to the update.  Coop will get his final dose of antibiotics for his ears before we leave here tonight.  That way he won't have to have more shots and can get the meds via IV instead.  Then we'll see Dr. B on friday again to recheck his ears and hopefully they will be all better.  Cooper is smiling tonight and that all by itself is encouraging to me.  He even walked around with Ollie for a short while at home before we came up here.  He hasn't walked in 3 days.  It was good to see him make the effort and succeed.  I will update again later I am sure.  Please pray that we can get on out of here.  I have had to school the nurse on line care already.  She wasn't going to wear gloves or clean the line before hooking Cooper up to fluids.  So I let her do it, but I hovered and gave her directions every step of the way. They don't do a lot of central lines out here.
