A pointless appointment 03-08-10

I can't tell you how frustrating it is to go to an appointment (at 8am, no less) and have absolutely nothing happen.  In fact, the doctor we saw told me that she hadn't ever looked at Cooper's records or labs and that it would take her about 2 weeks to go through it all before she could formulate a plan.  And in addition to that, she asked that I compile all of his labs into a spreadsheet from the last 3 months and then keep that going and email it to her every week - essentially making it so that she doesn't have to go through his records at all because I will have done it for her.  Then she went on to tell me that she has worked at TCH for "4 whole years" and has never heard of Dr. Vartabedian...am I sure that he works for TCH.  I told her that Dr. V was a resident at TCH before she was out of diapers (sorry Dr. V - I am certain I was exaggerating on that timeline!) and then yes, he most definitely works for TCH.  Then she told me that since Cooper is not a cancer patient, she really isn't too concerned about his multitude of health problems.  Because, if you didn't know, the only children that the TCH hematologists like to treat are the children with cancer.  And believe me, I want those kids treated WELL!  The deserve it!  But my goodness, there are other illnesses and other kids who are just as sick and who, many times, have very few treatment options - like Cooper.  About the only thing that came out of today's appointment was that we are probably going to be starting IV Iron infusions.  However, Iron is contra-indicated in mito kids, so I have to wait and see what Dr. Koenig thinks about that idea first.  I promise that I went to the appointment open minded and ready to work with the hematologists, but from the start the doctor ticked me off with her complete lack of knowlegde about my kid.  And, by the way, THEY called ME to set up this appointment.  In fact, I was told that Cooper HAD to come in immediately for this appointment because it was so pressing.  They wanted us there last week during our appt with Dr. K, but I declined that time because I was not about to miss another chance to meet with Dr. K.  That was absolutely the correct decision based off of today's appointment.  And so, tonight I will be making a lab values spreadsheet for Cooper's labs and each week, I will bug Mel (sorry Mel!) about getting me a copy of Cooper's labs so I can add the newest data points.  I will do this, not for the Hematologist at at TCH, but so that the doctors who actually give a hoot about my son can see if there are any patterns in his counts.  The doctor today said she will call me in a couple of weeks once she knows what she wants to do.  I won't hold my breathe!

Sorry for the moodiness of this update today, but this was just the weirdest and most pointless appointment we have ever been to with Cooper.  Tomorrow will be a better day - we see Miss Pat, which means we'll also see Mel to get those labs!  Cooper begs to see Pat every single day, including over the weekends.  He really enjoys his OT with her, even when she makes him touch foods and smell foods and do other things that make him uncomfortable.  One day he will thank her for her hard work!  Please pray that Cooper stays super healthy and that HIS CALL comes NOW!!!
